This is the roomiest of the PDF size targets: 2 MB, pre-filled in the fit-to-size mode of Compress PDF. Add a single document and the tool looks for the best JPEG quality that lands at or below that figure. Because it runs in your browser, the original file stays on your device throughout.

When you need a file under 2 MB
- A long scanned document, such as a many-page contract or a set of photographed pages, is a little too heavy for an upload box or an email attachment.
- You have a photo-rich brochure or portfolio exported to PDF, and you want to keep it presentable while making it easy to send around.
- Several pages of colored scans were merged into one file, and the combined size is awkward to share through a chat or a shared inbox.
- A form accepts a couple of megabytes, and you want the sharpest version that still passes rather than the most squeezed one.
What to expect
- At 2 MB there is plenty of room, so many documents land here at high image quality with changes that are hard to notice.
- A document that is already under this size may come out unchanged or nearly so, since the tool replaces an image only when the re-encoded copy is smaller.
- Scanned and photo-heavy files respond well. PDFs whose bulk is fonts, drawings or non-JPEG images have little for the tool to work on.
- A very long scan at high resolution can still miss the mark. The tool then returns its smallest build and flags that the target was not met.
- Input is limited to one PDF per run, up to the file size limit shown on the upload area.
How to use Compress PDF to 2 MB
Add your PDF. Drop one PDF onto the upload area or choose it from your device.
Check the mode. Fit to a target size is already selected. Switch to Compression level if you would rather pick Low, Medium or High.
Check the target. 2 MB (2 MB) is already entered in Target size. Change it if you need a different size. The smallest value accepted is 0.1 MB.
Fit the PDF. Select Fit PDF to size and wait for the progress bar to finish.
Download the result. Compare the original and new sizes, then download the file. If the target was missed you are told.
Limits and privacy
- One PDF at a time, up to 50 MB.
- Only embedded JPEG images are re-compressed. Text, vector graphics and page layout are left untouched.
- The tool tries up to 6 quality levels. If the target cannot be reached it returns the smallest result it found and says the target was missed.
- A PDF that is mostly text or vector artwork may barely shrink, because there are few images to re-encode.
- The file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.
- Without an account you get 3 free actions on this tool every 24 hours; signing in removes the cap.
Frequently asked questions
What if my file is still bigger than 2 MB?
The tool will report that the target was missed and offer the smallest file it could build. When that happens, the PDF is usually very long or holds images the tool does not re-encode. Splitting it into two shorter files is the practical next step.
Will my image quality drop a lot at this size?
Often only slightly, because the search keeps the highest quality that fits. The closer your original is to 2 MB, the less visible the change tends to be.
Which images inside a PDF are re-encoded?
Plain JPEG images in gray or RGB color without a transparency mask. Everything else, including other image formats, is left as it was.
Is the original file overwritten?
No, your original stays where it is. The compressed copy is offered as a separate download with a fit suffix in its name.
