This page starts Compress Image in its target-size mode with 20 KB entered for you. Add one picture and the tool tries several JPEG quality levels, then returns the sharpest version that fits. It all runs in your browser. Twenty kilobytes is very small, so expect a plain, softened look, especially for large photos.
When you need a file under 20 KB
- A small passport-style photo or a signature scan has to go into an upload field that accepts only a very small file.
- You need a thumbnail-sized picture for a profile form, and the field rejects anything heavier than a few dozen kilobytes.
- A simple scanned stamp or ID-sized crop must be attached to a form on a weak mobile connection where large uploads keep failing.
What to expect
- 20 KB is a hard ceiling for a picture. A small or already-cropped image can reach it, while a full-size camera photo usually cannot without a big loss of detail.
- The output is always a JPEG, whatever the original format was, so a PNG or WebP will change format in the process.
- Pictures with real transparency are left completely untouched, because JPEG cannot store it. The tool tells you so instead of flattening them.
- The pixel dimensions do not change. If your image is very large, shrink its dimensions first with the Resize Image tool and then fit it to 20 KB, which keeps far more detail.
- If even the lowest quality cannot get there, you receive the smallest JPEG the tool made, marked as having missed the target.
How to use Compress Image to 20 KB
Add one image. Drop a single image onto the upload area or choose it from your device. Fit to a target size works on one image at a time.
Check the mode. Fit to a target size is already selected. Switch to Compression level for Low, Medium or High.
Check the target. 20 KB (20 KB) is already entered in Target size. Change it if you need a different size.
Fit the image. Select Fit image to size and wait for the progress bar to finish.
Download the result. Compare the sizes and download the JPEG. If the target was missed you are told.
Limits and privacy
- One image at a time in this mode, up to 25 MB.
- Output is always JPEG, so PNG and WebP inputs are re-encoded as JPG.
- An image with real transparency is left untouched, because JPEG cannot store transparency.
- If the target cannot be reached you get the smallest result the tool can make, marked as missing the target.
- The file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.
- Without an account you get 3 free actions on this tool every 24 hours; signing in removes the cap.
Frequently asked questions
What if my file is still bigger than 20 KB?
The result is flagged as not reaching 20 KB, and you get the smallest JPEG the tool could produce. Large dimensions are the usual cause. Resize the picture to a smaller width and height first, then run it through this page again.
Why does my small image look blocky?
At this size the encoder has very few bytes per pixel, so blocks and smearing can show up around edges and in gradients. Cropping tightly or reducing the dimensions helps the quality.
Can I fit several photos to 20 KB together?
Not in this mode, which handles one image at a time. Run each picture on its own.
Why was my PNG returned unchanged?
Either it has transparency, which the tool will not remove, or the JPEG version was not smaller than the original. In both cases the original is kept and a note explains which it was.
